Visual & Performing Arts
“RAW: Natural Born Artists” is an independent arts organization created for artists by artists.
The
goal of RAW is to encourage the creative success of aspiring
visionaries and storytellers. Their mission is to provide emerging
independent artists within the first 10 years of their career with
tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate
creativity. RAW started as a group of creative individuals and has
become an international community supporting all genres and mediums
of art including independent film, fashion, music, visual art,
performing art, hairstylists, MUA and more.
The origin of RAW began in 2003 when Heidi Luerra moved to Los Angeles after graduating from a small town High School to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. She immediately started her own clothing line and sold her pieces at swap-meets on the weekends while attending school full-time, working part-time and interning in the fashion industry. After making friends with many talented artists, musicians and performers who were in the same circumstances, she presented her first multi-faceted Los Angeles showcase in 2005. The success of the event inspired her to create a platform for artists to gain exposure.
In 2009, the concept of RAW was born. After the first RAW event, a web developer named Matthew Klahorst approached Heidi about combining the artist events with an online showcase. This collaboration spawned the evolution of promoting artists online. In 2011, they expanded the concept beyond Southern California. RAW now hosts monthly showcases that spotlight indie talent in film, fashion, music, visual art, performing art and photography in 54 cities across the U.S. In July 2012, RAW made its international debut.
